A New Urgency

The synagogue’s building is purchased for the conversion into apartment units.

Archival photographs are taken before the mural is sealed behind a wall with the expectation it will never be seen again.

In 1986 members of Ohavi Zedek Synagogue’s archives committee were given access to take archival images of the mural prior to its being covered by a wall as the building was being converted into residential apartments. At that time it was thought the mural would be lost forever. These images will form the basis of the restoration effort. Once the mural is stabilized and extracted it will be restored to match these images (the only existing color images of the mural).

This really could be best captured through “Aaron’s story,” since it involves his effort, initially to create a team to move the mural (including Shelburne Museum Conservator Rick Kershner and Architect Marcel Beaudin, both of whom are important players in the later move)  and, when that proved impossible, to convince his former neighbor (Barbara Francis) and new owner of the property to install a false wall to hide and protect the mural.

An interesting sideline, involving the professional pictures that were taken (and some seem lighter and others darker – confusing), was Aaron’s success in reaching out to Ben Zion Black’s daughters. Leisha, the eldest, was I.M. Pei’s personal assistant.
